Manly-Warringah league officials are planning one more trial match before the start of the Winfield Cup.
The Sea Eagles made a first round departure from the Tooheys Challenge pre-season competition on Friday night, but the 16-6 loss to Newcastle was far from worrying for coach Bob Fulton. He will give his players a break from trials this weekend before a final warm-up match the following weekend.
Manly skipper Geoff Toovey said his side's defence was the most pleasing thing to come out of the Tooheys Challenge loss. ``It was unfortunate to lose and be knocked out of the competition, but there was a good side to it as well,'' Toovey said. ``A few of the players are carrying niggling injuries and they will have a chance to get over them before the start of the season.''
Prop Mark Carroll is one of those players, and was rested from the Newcastle match at Marathon stadium. ``I thought our defence was quite good given the amount of ball that Newcastle had,'' Toovey said. ``It wasn't our most impressive performance. We lacked ball control and probably didn't do enough with it. It was an opportunity to have a look at some of the younger players to see how they fit in under pressure.''
