Steve Menzies was the star as Manly buried Souths 44-6 at Brookvale
Oval in round one of the Optus Cup yesterday.
The Beaver scored four of Manly's eight tries, continuing his run
of 16 tries in 1994 and 22 in 1995.
Other players to shine in a thoroughly impressive performance were
Craig Innes, Cliff Lyons, Daniel Gartner and Owen Cunningham.
Manly also scored convincing wins in both under 21s and in reserve grade.
The Sea Eagles will face the Gold Coast at home on Sunday.

Renegade fullback Matthew Ridge has been named in the Manly side
to play Souths at Brookvale on Sunday. Ridge remains adamant, however,
that he will not play in an ARL-run competition. Forward Matt
Guberina will make his first-grade premiership debut in the game.

Finally finding some form, Manly trounced the Tigers 40-10 at Brookvale
yesterday. While the Eagles were impressive in scoring eight tries
to two, goal kicking is still a problem. Bob Fulton has not ruled out
Matthew Ridge returning to the club.

Manly's first game of the 1996 ARL premiership will be against South Sydney,
at Brookvale Oval, on Sunday 24th March.

League competition is disbanded. However due to a knee reconstruction,
he is unlikely to play any football until May.

Manly will play a trial against the Sydney Tigers at Brookvale Oval
at 3pm on Sunday. Admission is free and gates open at 11am.

Illawarra defeated Manly 34-22 in a pre-season trial held at
Brookvale Oval yesterday. In an uninspiring game of rugby league,
Manly trailed for most of the match before drawing level at 22-22
with five minutes remaining. However the Steelers scored two
soft tries at the death to take the game. Best for the Eagles
was captain Geoff Toovey, while Craig Innes and Mark Carroll
were also impressive. Click here
